Kona Boys

Kamakahonu Beach is one small jewel in anyone’s quiver of experiences who has had the good fortune of being there. The beach is an integral part of Kona’s community and is a colorful slice of paradise. On the east end of the beach, there is a whimsical surf shack that is patently Hawaiiana. It is quaint, colorful and amusing. Every time I take it in I smile and think to myself the Kona Boys are servicing people’s dreams. It’s not the paddle boards, or the kayaks, or the snorkel gear folks are lining up for – it is the opportunity to full fill their dream.

In this rendering I wanted to create something whimsical, playfully fanciful – something with bold colors that someone might see in their dreams and just want to be there. Life is too short to not follow up on one’s dreams.

This is though a high cost medicine that you can take to your need if you are a first cialis 10 mg robertrobb.com time user.

Waiting for Lane

Just sitting here waiting for Hurricane Lane to pass by – hopefully without damage. Everything here is good to go. With nothing else to do, I decided to try something bold, dark and at the same time, beautiful – kind of how I’m thinking about the hurricane. The last few months here on the Big Island with the volcano, vog and now Lane has been more than interesting.

Stay tuned.

Ohia Lehua

Legend says that one day Pele met a handsome warrior named Ohia and she asked him to marry her. Ohia, however, had already pledged his love to Lehua. Pele was furious when Ohia turned down her marriage proposal, so she turned Ohia into a twisted tree.

Lehua was heartbroken, of course. The gods took pity on Lehua and decided it was an injustice to have Ohia and Lehua separated. They thus turned Lehua into a flower on the Ohia tree so that the two lovers would be forever joined together.

So remember, Hawaiian folklore says that if you pluck this flower you are separating the lovers, and that day it will rain. And it has been raining a lot lately…

Odontoglossum crispum

Wikipedia notes this wonderful jewel is “considered by many to be the most beautiful orchid of all but is also one of the most difficult to grow.” Do tell…

Native to Columbia, it is found at altitudes of between 6,000 and 10,000 ft. with day temperatures of 66-70 F and night temps of 50-53 F. Well, it seems the plant is quite adaptable because we are at 1200 feet with day temps 80-85 and night temps 68-72. That, and I pretty much ignore it. Survival of the fittest is my motto. And yet, it flowers every January.

Also, according to Wikipedia, “ideally, the plants grow best in a cool marine climate, such as the California fog belt or the Pacific Northwest. Elsewhere, high daytime temperatures will enfeeble and destroy it, unless air-conditioning is available.”

I wonder what this thing would do if I actually took care of it? If nothing else, I think I’ll move it into a shadier location.

Emergency Alert! (Hawaiian Style)

As I we took the first sweeping curve headed up the Saddle Road headed to Hilo for the weekend, both our cell phones blew up with Hawaii’s Emergency Alert Siren. And while it is illegal to read text messages while driving. We read the following:

Emergency Alert
BALLISTIC MISSLE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII.
SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

And I drove off the road.

Well, while I was not happy about driving off the road, seeing our Tommy Bahama’s “Air Stream” break loose from the hitch, or the notion of ballistic missile’s raining down on our heads, I was happy to see we had a nice “shelter in place” option. I knew the pantry was stocked with homemade cookies and a bottle of Patron iced down in the cooler.

I mean if you are about to kiss your ass good bye, go out happy and numb. My only regret was I didn’t think we’d have time to barbeque the pork ribs.

Seriously. This was terrifying.
